Complex decongestive therapy comprises two mutually supportive phases, with an intensive decongestion phase laying the foundations for the success of the long-term maintenance phase.
The decongestion phase involves repeated manual lymphatic drainage combined with long-term compression therapy (bandaging or Adjustable Compression Wraps), exercises and skin care. The aim of this phase is to loosen hard areas, drain oedema and thus reduce the circumference of the part of the body affected.
In the maintenance phase, the frequency of the manual lymphatic drainage is reduced. In order to maintain the success of the therapy, flat knit compression garments are worn on a long-term basis. Due to their knitted properties, these garments create an increased working pressure and massage effect. The exercises and skin care are continued during this phase.
